after the adoption

In recent years, adoptions have become more “open”, in that birth parents can stay in touch with their child, and the adoptive family, after adoption.

As a birth parent, you have the right to decide on the amount of contact you feel able to have with your child.

You have the right to:

  • request non-identifying information held by DoCS or an adoption agency about the health and welfare of your child before they turn 18
  • obtain identifying information about your child and make contact with your child after they turn 18 – if the child has not prevented contact by lodging a ‘contact veto’
  • prevent your child from contacting you when they turn 18 by lodging a ‘contact veto'

There are also options for ongoing contact with your child and their adoptive parents before your child turns 18. DoCS’ post order support services can coordinate exchange of information such as letters, photos and gifts, or even set up meetings between you, your child and their adoptive family.

NOTE: 'contact veto' provisions only apply to adoption orders made before 26 October 1990.
