family packing carBeing well prepared will minimise the impact of a disaster on you and your family. If a disaster is threatening your house and there is a possibility you may be evacuated, the following list will help you prepare.

Remember to take:

  • medication, prescriptions, ventilators etc
  • glasses, hearing aids, dentures
  • nappies and formula for babies
  • papers such as passport, birth certificate, insurance papers, bank books, as well as photos and mementos (see how to replace personal documents)
  • light essential bedding and clothing, at least for overnight
  • cash and non-perishable foods and bottles of water to last 12 hours
  • your pets.

Prior to leaving:

  • let a friend of family know where you are going
  • remind your neighbours of the evacuation — especially if they are old or infirm
  • make sure everyone is with you
  • advice on what to do if you evacuate your home can be found at the NSW Rural Fire Service and SES websites.
