Briefing sessions support new reporting changes

caseworker interviewing childHalf day cross-agency briefings are taking place in more than 550 locations across NSW for key mandatory reporters to support their understanding of structured decision making and the new reporting guidelines.

People who work with children and families from government and non-government agencies should attend the sessions being held at TAFE locations in rural and metro locations.

Human Services update

Improved service delivery in rural and remote communities is just one of several priorities for the new Human Services department, which brings together community services, ageing, disability services, housing, juvenile justice and Aboriginal affairs. # More

New information sharing legislation

Government agencies, NGOs and some health practitioners will soon be able to share information about a child or young person without Community Services involvement as part of Keep Them Safe amendments to Chapter 16A of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998 due in the next few weeks.

A government agency or NGO may request information held by another agency that relates to the safety, welfare or wellbeing of a child or young person. # More

Fostering NSW -  new website

A pioneering new website was launched at the Foster Care Week Carnival by Minister for Community Services Linda Burney and CEO of Association of Children’s Welfare Agencies (ACWA) Andrew McCallum to help recruit more foster carers.

People using the website can find information about becoming foster carers in NSW for Government and non-government organisations. # More

Too much formal child care can be bad

Too much time in formal child care in the early years can lead to poor teacher relationships and behavioural problems in kindergarten, according to the report of the Child Care Choices longitudinal extension study. # More

Keep Them Safe Family Referral Services

Three Family Referral Services will be piloted in Dubbo, Mt Druitt and Newcastle as part of the new unified approach towards child and family wellbeing under Keep Them Safe. # More
