NGO training program

As a result of the changes to the child protection system following the implementation of Keep Them Safe, the NGO training program is focused on delivering child protection training to support NGOs.

To increase the knowledge and skills of NGO staff in child protection, including recent changes to the child protection system, we are offering free child protection training with a choice of three courses listed below.

Case management: working with clients with complex needs

This one-day course provides an overview of the case management responsibilities when working with clients with complex needs. The program will explore current solutions and strategies being employed with clients with complex needs underpinning case management. It also provides an overview of the range of issues that may present when working with clients with complex needs and an opportunity for participants to share their practice wisdom on how to work with these issues.

The session also begins to provide an overview of the range of issues that may present when working with clients with complex needs, including mental illness, dual diagnosis, alcohol and other drugs, intellectual and physical disability, violence and aggression and child protection issues. It is also an opportunity for participants to determine the assessment and planning issues involved.

At the end of the session:

  • participants will discuss the complex issues or client challenges they are working with and outline the positive responses and solutions to complex issues currently available or in use
  • participants will identify critical assessment and planning issues when working with the complex needs of mental illness, dual diagnosis, AOD, intellectual or physical disability, violence and aggression and child protection.

Note: you must have completed Case management: an introduction (or equivalent) to be eligible to attend this course.

Identify & respond to children and young people at risk - CHCCHILD401A

This is a two-day fundamental child protection course, which is suitable for staff who work with families, children or youth and wish to update their knowledge and learn about the new child protection system.

The course provides information about child protection such as working with children young people and families, creating child safe workplaces and the indicators of abuse and the impacts on children.

Information is also included about:

  • the changes to the child protection system – Keep Them Safe and the new reporting thresholds
  • roles and responsibilities of NGOs
  • the NSW Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998
  • identifying risk of significant harm
  • working collaboratively with other organisations
  • the reporting process and use of the mandatory reporter guidance tool (MRG).

All participants receive a statement of attendance upon completion of this course.

Participants may also choose to complete assessment tasks and submit them to an registered training organisation (RTO) such as CCWT for assessment in order to receive a statement of attainment for CHCCHILD401A, which is a unit of competence from the CHC08 Community Services training package.

Note: CHCCILD401A has replaced the previous unit of competency, CHCCHILD1C.

There is a fee charged by the RTO to complete the assessment. Further details regarding the statement of attainment are available by contacting the NGO training program or an RTO which offers the statement of attainment such as CCWT directly on 02 9281 8822.

Case management – an introduction

This program is designed for staff from Community Services, funded non-government partners who as part of their service delivery provide case management support services to clients.

No prior knowledge or experience in case management is required. The course will provide participants:

  • the skills, knowledge and values to provide case management support services within an agency and interagency context.
  • updated agency and interagency context including the legislative and best practice requirements influencing the various agencies including the Keep Them Safe policies and procedures.

child protection dynamics

Child protection dynamics is a three-day advanced child protection course. This course is suitable for staff with child protection experience.

The course provides participants with the theoretical perspectives about abuse and neglect that underpin best practice child protection intervention.

This is integrated with knowledge about child development and indicators and effects of abuse, to enable participants to maximise positive outcomes for children, young people and carers.

Learning outcomes of this course are:

  • identify key child development issues relating to children and young people

  • define child abuse and neglect and describe the cultural, social and institutional factors which inform such definitions

  • describe the dynamics, indicators and effects of abuse and neglect

  • describe the attachment process and identify practice implications in child protection practice

  • describe and apply an integrated theoretical approach to the causes of child abuse and neglect

  • outline key assessment and intervention considerations regarding the different abuse and neglect types

Note: you must have completed either CHCCHILD401A or CHCCHILD1C to be eligible to attend this course.
