can you help a Muslim child who needs parents?
Maya is an 11-month old happy and contented Muslim baby who recently started rolling over, grabbing things and reaching for toys. Maya has also begun to make babbling noises. Maya’s parents have requested that we find her Muslim adoptive parents.
Maya needs special attention and devotion; she is diagnosed with Down Syndrome and has a cardiac condition which is being treated.
Maya needs to regularly visit the paediatrician, and occasionally a cardiologist. The NSW Department of Community Services will provide financial support for medical costs, if this is assessed as appropriate.
Although you will be Maya’s adoptive parents, she has a legal right to know who her birth parents are. In accordance with Muslim adoption principles, and NSW adoption practice, it will be important for you to tell her about her birth parents when she is old enough to understand.
Maya eats solid foods and plays with her feet a lot which is a signal that she is preparing to crawl!
If you would like to know more about how you can change Maya’s life and enrich yours, we’d like to hear from you. Call Nahia Agha on 87137978 or 0418 273 243 for more information in both Arabic and English.
Muslim adoption principles and adoption in NSW
The term ‘adoption’ is often perceived as connected to secrecy and not knowing one’s birth family in Australian society. This outdated interpretation of adoption can lead Australian Muslims to think they cannot legally adopt a child in Australia without violating Muslim adoption principles.
Research has shown that adopted people need to know where they come from and that secrets aren’t a good basis for any relationship. Adoption legislation and practices have changed accordingly.
These changes make it easier for Australian Muslims to adopt children in NSW as the practices are in accordance with Muslim views on adoption. See our brochure Information for the Muslim community about adoption (English) or Information for the Muslim community about adoption (Arabic)
For more information about adoption in NSW in accordance with Muslim adoption principles call the Muslim Foster Care Team on 02 8713 7800 during business hours 5 days a week (except Thursdays from 9 am - 1 pm). Arabic speaking workers will be available to assist with your call.
