Psychologists and clinical psychologists employed by DoCS play a vital role in shaping and supporting new approaches to child and family support services in NSW.
what type of work will I be doing?
Psychologists provide support to caseworkers, managers and other specialists on complex cases and assist in the training of caseworkers and foster parents.
Psychologists work with vulnerable and disadvantaged families in the community, where risk factors such as abuse, alcohol and drug misuse, domestic violence and psychiatric illness can impact on a child’s development, safety and wellbeing. They also work with issues relating to psychosocial development and learning across all ages from children and young people, to parents and families.
Psychologists conduct assessments and make recommendations that inform caseworkers of how best they can assist their clients.
They also provide counselling and therapeutic interventions to assist children and young people adjust emotionally and physically to their environment in order to improve their general well being.
Most referrals to psychologists come from caseworkers in relation to concerns about a child who may be at risk of harm.
where will I be working?
You will work closely with caseworkers in one of 85 Community Services Centres across NSW, combining office and home consultations, and where necessary, appearing in court.
what qualifications do I need?
The minimum qualification is a for year Honours degree or equivalent approved by the NSW Psychologists Registration Board.
A post graduate degree in clinical psychology or an equivalent would further assist in working with DoCS clients.
While many of DoCS’ new psychologists are recent university graduates, the nature of the work means that maturity and life experience, combined with a relevant degree, are highly valued.

will I get on the job training?
DoCS' psychologists are provided with supervision depending on their needs, as well as skill development. Intern psychologists are also provided supervision to meet the requirements of registration with the NSW Psychologists’ Registration Board.
